Friction is defined as the resistance to motion between two objects in contact with each other. To prevent one object from sliding on another acts as friction. The automobile many parts are rotating and sliding with other parts. Some of the power developed by engine must be used up in overcoming this friction.

Demerits effects of Friction/Disadvantage of Friction:

Friction is an effect which wasted power because it does not contribute to moving the car. On the other hand friction is very valuable in the car brakes. It also creates noise.

Characteristics of Friction:

Friction varies with the pressure applied between the sliding surfaces, the roughness of the surfaces and the material of which the surfaces are made. Mainly friction varies with the load, types of material and roughness of a surface.

Coefficient of Friction:

People need to know exact way to find frictional differences than to say that one surface has a high friction and another surface a low friction. For this reason developed an idea coefficient of friction.

How can the problem be remedied : No residual magnetism, reversed field connection and high resistance of field circuit are responsible for the failure of build up process of a dc generator. The factors are explained below: No residual magnetism: For the starting build up process requires some residual magnetism in the magnetic circuit then no voltage will be generated that can produce current flow through field circuit. Reversed field connection: The voltage induced inside the coil of field circuit due to residual magnetism that can permit the flow of current. For the following direction of this flux will be created and the direction of this flux will be same direction as the residual flux. If the field connections are reversed the lines of flux produced by current flow will oppose the residual flux, as a result generate voltage will decrease rather than increase.
