What is Open Channel?

Open Channel: A passage in which liquid flows with its upper surface exposed to atmosphere. In Open channels the flow is due to gravity, thus the flow conditions are greatly influenced by the slope of the channels. Difference between Open Channel Flow and Pipe Flow: 1.       Open Channel has gravity force but Pipe flows pipe runs and the flow in general takes place at the expense of hydraulic pressure. 2.       Open Channels may have any shape: triangular, rectangular, trapezoidal, parabolic and circular.Pipes are generally cross section. 3.       Varies between wide limits, the hydraulic roughness varies with depth of flow. In Pipe flow roughness co-efficient varies from a low value, depending upon the material of the pipe. 4.       In Open Channel Flow H.G.L. os coincide with the water surface but Pipe Flow is not coincide with the water surface. ...
