The fuel and oxidizer do not come into contact directly with each other. One reaction is occurring on the surface of one electrode and ionizes the fuel and released electrons into an external circuits. Other reaction takes place on the surface of the second electrode, a reaction occurs that accept electron from external circuit and ionize the oxidizations.
